German company launches headphones that monitor heart rate and body temperature

Sennheiser’s Momentum Sport headphones will bring music to your ears as well as compatible heart rate for most major fitness trackers.

German manufacturer

Sennheiser, a traditional German manufacturer, presented its new sports headphones, and they do much more than just play your favorite music while you bike, run or walk.

The brand has built into the earbuds a “photoplethysmographic (PPG) heart rate sensor” that is similar to the optical sensors found in smartwatches and, even more intriguingly, also a core body temperature sensor.

Compatible with major technology platforms

Sennheiser confirmed in a press release this week that its new gadgets will stream data to Apple, Garmin, Strava, Peloton and more popular sports technology platforms.

Wahoo products already offer integration with the Core brand of body heat sensors, so it’s not yet known whether Sennheiser’s new headphones will work with Wahoo’s ELEMNT line.

The Sennheiser Momentum Sport buds are also said to offer “deep integration” with Polar’s biosensing Flow app ecosystem.

Heat sensor

The addition of a core body temperature sensor takes training to another level. Heart rate monitors and power meters are essential for training enthusiasts, but heat sensors have yet to make similar strides outside of the professional peloton.

Core temperature monitors (typically using sensors or special vests) are common in the professional peloton and can offer insight into how a cyclist can cope with the harshest conditions they may face during high summer.

Battery life and price

Battery life is up to six hours, extending to a full 24 hours with the charging case, and they’re IP55 rated for water and dust resistance – meaning they’ll withstand sweat, rain showers, and the dirt of a day on the Gravel or Mountain Bike trail.

Charging is done via regular USB-C and Qi wireless is also supported.

The Sennheiser Momentum Sport headphones will go on sale globally from April 9, 2024 and will retail for $329.95/€329.90.
