The seven names for the Visma-Lease a Bike Giro d’Italia 2024 were already known. Johannes Staune-Mittet was expected to be eighth, as the 22-year-old Norwegian athlete had been announced by organizer RCS Sport. in the same press release as Tadej Pogacar. However, it will not be him, but Attila Valter, who will go to the Giro, as confirmed by Dutch website WielerFlits.
Attila Valter: The last piece of the puzzle
Current Hungarian champion Attila Valter is the last name in the Visma-Lease a Bike preliminary selection for the Giro. He is in his second season with the Dutch team. The 25-year-old cyclist had a solid 2023, with a fourth place in O Gran Camiño and a fifth place in the Strade Bianche.
After the Hungarian title and a strong last stage in the Vuelta a Burgos (with the traditional finish at Lagunas de Neila), he raced the Vuelta a España in service of the three leaders. Originally, the Hungarian was also going to race the Giro last year, but the team decided to withdraw him from the competition. They wanted to see Valter in the Ardennes Classics, where he could race on his own.
Visma-Lease a Bike has big plans for the Giro
Thus, in the Giro d’Italia 2024 he will be able to try to win in stages, as Visma-Lease a Bike will have this objective in the Italian competition. In the flatter stages, Wout van Aert and Olav Kooij should try to repeat their Tour of Britain success, while Jan Tratnik and Edoardo Affini (in addition to their work on the sprint train) will mark the transition stages. Robert Gesink, Wilco Kelderman, Cian Uijtdebroeks and Atilla Valter will have their chance in the mountain stages, although Kelderman and Uijtdebroeks will also be aiming for a good overall classification.
