German cyclist Michel Hessmann of Visma-Lease a Bike has been released from a possible prison sentence after a criminal doping investigation was dropped. Hessmann tested positive for a diuretic out of competition after the 2023 Giro d’Italia. In Germany, anti-doping laws are strict and proof of use of banned substances can not only result in suspension from sport but also possible prison sentences .
Criminal investigation discarded
The 22-year-old cyclist will not be arrested in connection with the doping case, as the Freiburg Public Prosecutor’s Office has ruled out a criminal investigation. This does not influence whether the athlete will be suspended from the sport or released by the Dutch team, but it puts an end to the possibility of something worse.
Future at Visma-Lease a Bike still uncertain
Although the criminal investigation has been discarded, it is still uncertain whether Hessmann will return to the squad or be released by the team. As the months passed, little information about the case was revealed.
