The stewards of the women’s Tour Down Under carried out checks of the angle of the brake levers before the start of the first stage, using a template. The jig used today is still a prototype, allowing up to 10º of inward rotation, while the UCI works with manufacturers and the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) to define.
According to the website Escapecollective, which leaked the information, the 10º allowed by this prototype was more generous than many expected, with the majority of bikes tested today passing without problems.
Where stewards identified lever angles above the legal limit of 10°, team mechanics were simply asked to adjust them on the spot.
The adoption of the 10th is not yet definitive; UCI may request further modifications
It is not yet known whether the maximum of 10º imposed today will be maintained or whether the UCI investigations will determine a lower safety limit. Commissioner Greg Griffiths was interviewed and revealed that the lever angle template will be available to the teams as soon as it is finalized.
