Belgian Tim Merlier won the first stage of the UAE Tour this Monday. He defeated strong competition in massive sprint. Dutchman Arvid de Kleijn came in second place, followed by Jakub Mareczko, who took third place.
The exciting final sprint was marred by an unfortunate crash, which affected part of the field. Fernando Gaviria started the sprint, however, the Colombian cyclist was unable to maintain the lead and was overtaken by several cyclists, including Merlier.
Ivo Oliveira involved in the finish crash
Portuguese Ivo Oliveira was involved in the crash upon arrival. Apparently only with scratches and without major consequences, as can be seen in the team’s official post.
A perfect day for sprinters
The first stage of the UAE Tour was described as perfect for sprinters, with no significant challenges or categorized climbs on the route. However, the stage was the scene of significant expectations due to the predictability of the strong wind.
The stage started with an escape by two cyclists, Mark Stewart and Marco Murgano, both from the Corratec-Vini Fantini team. They managed to have a maximum lead of almost four minutes before being caught by the peloton.
Good start to the season for Tim Merrier
This is the third victory of the season for Tim Merlier. The Soudal QuickStep cyclist also won two stages on the AlUla Tour this year.
“I am very happy with this victory. It was a difficult sprint, but I felt good and managed to finish strong”, said Merlier after the stage. The UAE Tour will continue tomorrow with the second stage, which should feature a similar profile, providing another opportunity for the sprinters to shine.
