“The Giro d’Italia begins next year with a stage from Venaria Reale to Turin, via Superga. The second stage will finish in Oropa, on the climb where much of the Giro’s history has been written. The Giro d’Italia organizer, RCS Sport, revealed today the profiles of the first three stages.
1st Stage
The opening stage starts in Venaria Reale in the Piedmont region in northern Italy. The stage includes three categorized climbs, including the ascent to Superga (4.9 km at 9.1%). In the past, this climb was part of the Milan-Turin race. The first stage of the 2024 Giro also finishes in Turin, where riders face a local stage for the first time, featuring the Colle della Maddalena (6.1 km at 7.4%).
2nd Stage
On the second day, riders finish in Oropa, also in Piedmont. The 11.8 km climb at 6% constitutes the final part of a 150 km stage. Before the final first-category ascent, there are also two third-category climbs.
The ascent to Oropa has been included in the Giro route six times before. In 1999, Marco Pantani astonished the world with an unprecedented climb, and in 2017, Tom Dumoulin emerged victorious after a strong sprint. A week later, the Dutchman also won the Giro d’Italia. Now, the climb is particularly early in the stage.
3rd Stage
The third stage goes from Novara to Fossano, covering a distance of 165 kilometers. It seems to be the first opportunity for sprinters, although there is still a small ascent towards the end.
