Telefonica, the telecommunications company to which Movistar is linked, has been a dedicated sponsor of the Movistar cycling team for a long period. However, the team has actively been seeking a co-sponsor, without success so far. Behind the scenes, Eusebio Unzué, the team’s leader, continues to search for additional financing.
Unzué, now 68 years old, revealed this information in an interview with Mundo Deportivo. “I hope we can announce it next year, we’ll see. With an additional sponsor, we can keep our best cyclists, and we also have more options in the transfer market.”
With an extra sponsor on board, the team hopes to be more financially effective. According to Unzué, his team is currently ranked between sixth and tenth in the WorldTour in terms of budget.
“This additional sponsor is necessary to increase our budget and attract cyclists that we otherwise couldn’t hire,” he said on the RadioCycling podcast.
