Mathieu Van der Poel’s father reveals he wasn’t doing well at the Benidorm World Cup: “I never managed to tell him to lie about it”

Mathieu van der Poel is considered the big favorite for the Cyclocross World Championship, however, before that, next Saturday, there will be another stage of the World Cup, in Hoogerheide, in the Netherlands, whose organizer is none other than his father Adrie .

Will Van der Poel easily win the World Championship in Tábor (Czech Republic)?
In an interview with Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, he analyzes his son’s Cyclocross season. The father starts by answering the question, which many fans say is that it will be an easy victory for the World Champion in the Czech Republic. “Of course you’ll never hear me say that.”

“Look, Matje didn’t really have good legs in Benidorm. That was what happened. In twenty years of cycling, I have never been able to tell him to lie about it. In training this week it sounded completely different: ‘Super legs, dad’ he said.”

Spain is fundamental in the development process of Mathieu Van der Poel

Still, Van der Poel impressed on several occasions in Benidorm. “For me there are two reasons why it is so easy. Firstly: he will now run completely pain-free, which makes a big difference.”

“And two: Spain is also obviously a factor. He really found his place there. He doesn’t stay there full time, but this winter he spent four of the five months there. He trains well there, it’s well organized and there’s, for example, a good physiotherapist nearby.”

Good friends and restaurants

Things are also going very well on Vathieu Van der Poel’s private side. “Matje is very happy. He has good friends there and knows good restaurants. And of course, no complaints from mom and dad,” Adrie laughs.

“Not serious. Of course I would prefer to see him more often, but he is 29 years old. So we don’t need to be together all the time. These parents exist too, but it’s not my style. Last week we were all together in Spain and it was a lot of fun”, concludes Adrie Van der Poel.
