Mark Cavendish won the 4th stage of the Tour Colombia. Winning a massive sprint, Cavendish managed to distance himself from his rivals, thanks to the exemplary work of teammates Michael Mørkøv and Cees Bol. The British cyclist was full of praise for his team after the victory, stating that “they were phenomenal”.
Cavendish’s post-race words
“I’m speechless,” began the British winner. “In the last kilometers, I was coming after the boys and I knew I couldn’t let them down. They were phenomenal.”, reported Cavendish in reference to his team.
He highlighted that not only at the end of the race, at other times the team demonstrated its value, isolated when the field split up on a climb, they pursued the escape with determination.
Despite the formation of a group at the front with a difference of seventy kilometers from the finish line, the peloton led by Movistar and Quickstep managed to catch up with the fugitives.
The race seemed to be heading towards an inevitable massive sprint, but with thirty kilometers to go, three cyclists managed to break the monotony again. Once again, the sprint’s dominant teams managed to regroup the peloton, setting up a thrilling sprint finish in Colombia.
The joy of the winner
“The belief and passion my teammates showed for our colors almost brought me to tears. I’m so proud to be able to bring another stage win to our team here in Colombia. And racing against Fernando Gaviria, a Colombian runner, in Colombia was something really special.
“He was coming so fast and after the hard work of both teams, I was very happy to share the podium with him,” shared Cavendish, showing his gratitude for the team and recognizing Gaviria’s talent.
