Giulio Ciccone will have the start of his 2024 season postponed due to a health problem. The Italian had to undergo surgery this Monday, February 5th, to remove a perineal cyst. Doctors recommended the cyclist rest for four weeks, which means he will not be able to participate in the team’s next Training Camp in Teide (Spain), nor compete in Tirreno-Adriatico.
The team’s statement
In an official statement on its website, Lidl-Trek explained Ciconne’s situation: “Because of a perineal cyst, Giulio Ciccone had to interrupt his preparation for the season.”
“Due to severe inflammation, he had to undergo surgery to remove the cyst. Doctors have recommended a four-week cycling ban, although this depends on post-operative development.”
The consequences for Ciccone
At age 29, Ciccone planned to start his season by competing in the Tirreno-Adriatico, a race that takes place in his home country of Italy. However, with the medical ban on cycling, he will have to withdraw from the competition that takes place between March 4th and 10th.
The Lidl-Trek team has promised to provide updates on Ciccone’s health status at some point in the future. For now, the athlete is considered the team captain for the Giro d’Italia, which takes place between May 4th and 26th.
