Sunday’s Stage 21 in Madrid marked the pinnacle of his outstanding performance, and further fortified his place in the annals of cycling history.

Keep in mind, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. With the likes of Enric Mas (Movistar) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) hot on his heels, Evenepoel faced stiff competition. However, his consistent and strategic performance won the day, sealing his overall victory and a 2:05 advantage over second place Enric Mas.

How Did Evenepoel Secure the Victory?

It entailed more than just sheer physical pleasure. Looking back, one can observe a series of decisive moments such as Evenepoel’s impressive display on stage 20. Despite finishing 6th, he carved out a sizable margin of 2:07 ahead of his red jersey rivals going into that stage. An unwavering approach, coupled with tactical execution, saw him finish with a 2:05 lead over Mas, and a hefty 5:08 lead over third-position holder Ayuso. This spectacular cycling victory provided a strong finish with a Spanish 2-3 on the podium.

Behind the Vuelta podium, other noteworthy performances included Astana’s Miguel Angel López securing his fourth place position, Carlos Rodríguez of Ineos Grenadiers slipping from 5th to 7th, and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) claiming the 5th position.
