The third stage of the Volta ao Algarve ended in a frustrating way for Rui Costa (Ef Education). After approximately 115km of the route, with just over 80km to go until the finish, the Portuguese cyclist was involved in a fall and had to abandon the race.
The incident also affected teammate Van den Berg, as well as Thuman Arensman (INEOS) and Donavan Grondin (Arkéa). In the images, Costa’s situation is worrying.
Being attended to by the medical team, Rui Costa needed to have his arm immobilized in an emergency. Exams must be carried out to estimate recovery.
With great expectations for the race, Rui Costa ended up extremely frustrated with his early abandonment of the competition. On social media, messages of support have already been posted from followers from different regions of the world.
