UAE Team Emirates’ Brandon Macnulty was the strongest in Alto del Miserat and became the overall leader after defeating Aleksadr Vlasov (BORA-Hansgrohe) and Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) and the other contenders for victory in the Valencian competition.
Tragedy at the arrival site
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the stage was shortened due to the death of one person, who suffered a heart attack in the finish line in Vall d’Ebo. An incident that caused the end of the stage and the official times to be placed at Alto del Miserat, resulting in a reduction of 15 kilometers in the initial route.
In this way, Miserat (5.7 km at 9.2%) would be the decisive climb. A wall that was revealed last March, by Alberto Contador, who stated that with his 20% ramps, big differences would be made.
Attacks at the beginning of the ascension
When the final climb began, a small breakout that had formed was swallowed up and around 20 cyclists took on the final 4km climb. That number soon declined further as the big cyclists sped up.
A very strong trio with Aleksandr Vlasov, Santiago Buitrago and Brandon McNulty was moving away from the others. The three tried their luck, but it was McNulty who proved stronger to win.
With 2km to go Macnulty attacked and managed to open a gap. In the last few hundred meters, Buitrago and Vlasov came a little closer, but in the end they were eight seconds behind. Macnulty managed to cross the finish line alone.
