Alpecin-Deceuninck adopts a look inspired by a Levi’s catalogue. Team of World Champion Mathieu van der Poel, the team announced a new uniform for 2024 this Thursday.
The original uniform, which was used in the 2023 season, was replaced after the end of the cyclocross season, and the new equipment will make its debut at the UAE Tour (UAE Tour) next week.
Union of casual style with sport
“The denim uniform represents our team’s outlook for 2024: we dare to stand out, while staying grounded,” according to a press release. “Working hard together, while having fun together. Because jeans are great for any occasion, right?”
Details of the new look
Alpecin-Deceuninck’s clothing supplier, Kalas, described the new uniform as having a “denim effect”. The manufacturer claims that it is a combination of “several types of fabrics”. The “Stripes” material on the shoulders and sleeves, benefiting airflow, are made from polyester and elastane, while the main panels are simply referred to as “stretch material”. The shorts are made from a “Power Lycra fabric with 4-way stretch.”
Cycling and Jeans: an ancient connection
This isn’t the first time that professional cycling has flirted with jeans. This new uniform will bring back memories of the Carrera team from the 1990s. The Italian team was sponsored by a jeans company and competed for several seasons in shorts and even fake denim shirts.
Marco Pantani and Stephen Roche were two of the biggest sports stars of all time to adopt jeans in the biggest races in the world.
