The famous German brand Lightweight, specialist in high performance wheels, has just launched a new set of wheels that raises its price standard to a new level. This is the new Lightweight Obermayer Evo Signature Gold Edition wheelset, adorned with 23-carat gold leaf, which is priced at $9,850.
A tribute to the founder and a nod to the Olympic Games
According to Lightweight, the set of wheels is a tribute to the company’s founder, Heinz Obermayer. The gold leaf is a reference to the upcoming Paris Olympics and the victory of current Olympic road champion Richard Carapaz, who won his Lightweight wheeled medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Obermayer Evo wheels, named after the brand’s founder, have CeramicSpeed bearings and are limited to 99 pairs worldwide. Lightweight announced that 33 pairs will be destined for Europe, 33 for Asia and the Pacific and 33 for the United States.
The Obermayer Evo wheels weigh, according to the company, 1,230 grams per pair. They’re handcrafted in Germany and use Lightweight’s all-carbon construction, with a foam core in the rim and twenty spokes in the front and back.
Lightweight’s presence in professional competitions
Lightweight wheels are often seen in the professional peloton, especially in mountain stages of grand tours, World Championships and Olympic road races. Rumor has it that Lance Armstrong even purchased his own Lightweight wheels during the mid-2000s, and the Ineos Grenadiers team used them in the 2019 Tour de France and other races.
