The Down Under Classic is not an official UCI competition, but a criterium that traditionally takes place a few days before the start of the Santos Tour Down Under. The peloton is virtually identical to the six-day event. The race was previously called the Schwalbe Classic.
The race, which lasted 1 hour plus one lap, on a 1.35km circuit had many attacks. In the end, a group including Jhonatan Narvaez (INEOS Grenadiers) and Natnael Tesfatsion isolated themselves.
The peloton was unable to control the escape, although it still came very close in the final kilometer. Narvaez proved to be the fastest in the front group and won the finish, with Natnael Testfasion (Lidl-Trek) and Isaac del Toro (in his first race for UAE Team Emirates), in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.
