21-year-old Magnus Sheffield is highly respected within the INEOS Grenadiers team, and there are expectations that in 2024 he will be able to showcase his talent in a Grand Tour, following his victory at Brabantse Pijl in 2022.
“It will be exciting to see what he can do this year,” INEOS Grenadiers sporting director Oli Cookson recently said in conversation with the Velo website. “A Grand Tour is part of the plan. He looks good and is in very good shape.”
Frustrated debut in 2023
Sheffield’s Grand Tour debut was initially planned to take place in 2023. After an accident on the same Tour de Suisse descent, which tragically took the life of Gino Mader, however, the American was not in the mental or physical condition to compete. in last year’s Vuelta a España.
“Magnus is a huge talent,” said Cookson. “He is a very intelligent, well-educated and motivated young man who knows what he wants and is progressing in the right direction.”
It seems that perhaps the Giro d’Italia is the best opportunity to demonstrate Sheffield’s skills, in support of the expected INEOS Grenadiers leader, Geraint Thomas.
