An unexpected accident, a flat tire, and a damaged saddle. Certainly, things didn’t go as planned for Wout van Aert during his participation in the Gravel World Championship in Veneto. At the end of the competition, he crossed the finish line in eighth place, with a difference of over eight minutes from the winner, Matej Mohoric. However, luck could have smiled differently for him, as he revealed on Instagram.
“Find the mistake,” writes the 29-year-old cyclist in the first image. This is followed by a photo of the top ten in the Gravel World Championship, with Mohoric as the winner in a time of four hours, 53 minutes, and 57 seconds.
In the third and final part of Van Aert’s story, we see a photo of his own Garmin. This shows that the Belgian was on the bike for four hours, 51 minutes, and 35 seconds. In other words, the Jumbo-Visma cyclist may have been on the road longer than Mohoric, but he pedaled less time than the Slovenian. During the moments when Van Aert had to get off his bike due to an accident, the stopwatch on his Garmin was stopped. In total, he must have been stationary for more than ten minutes.
