In an unusual situation, Cofidis was forced to withdraw from the Gran Camiño competition in Spain. The reason was due to a series of injuries that disabled six of its runners.
The team’s streak of adversity began when Simon Geschke contracted COVID-19. Eddy Finé fractured his shoulder and Stefano Oldani, his hand. Still on the injured list is Axel Zingle, who suffered an elbow injury. In addition to them, Stanislaw Aniolkowski has a knee injury and Gorka Izagirre is suffering from fatigue with no defined cause yet.
Other competitions will be affected by the team’s absence
The news of Cofidis’ withdrawal from O Gran Camiño was communicated to the organizers of the event, which begins on February 22nd. The remainder of the team’s riders were assigned to other major competitions such as the UAE Tour, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Ardèche Classic and Drôme Classic, both on the French calendar. These commitments, combined with the lack of a development team, limit Cofidis’ participation in smaller competitions.
Jonas Vingegaard has a guaranteed presence
There’s just under a month left until Jonas Vingegaard’s season begins. The Danish cyclist from Visma-Lease a Bike returns this year to do his first race of the season, in Spain, in the Spanish 4-stage race. The Gran Camino will take place from February 22nd to 25th.
