Stage 17 of the Vuelta a España began as expected, explosively. Perhaps even too explosively for some. Right on the first climb of the day, the Alto de La Colladiella, two very strong attacks occurred, first with Remco Evenepoel, who was pulled by his teammate Mattia Cattaneo.
And then a solo attack, which could be considered an all-or-nothing move, by Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates).
However, in the main peloton, first Jumbo-Visma and then Bahrain Victorious, didn’t allow any breakaway to succeed. As they approached the final climb, the Altu de l’Angliru, the already greatly reduced peloton remained compact. At this point, Jumbo-Visma and Bahrain Victorious once again set the pace. Without any attacks, but with an incredibly strong pace, competitors like UAE Team Emirates and Movistar Team began to fall behind.
And with an acceleration by Primoz Roglic, followed by Vingegaard, Sepp Kuss was left behind by the trio, which at that moment, was alone in the lead.
And Primoz Roglic ultimately crossed the finish line, winning Stage 17 of the Vuelta a España 2023. Jonas Vingegaard, who finished alongside Roglic, took the 2nd position in the stage, and Sepp Kuss secured the 3rd place, making it another all-Jumbo-Visma podium.
João Almeida finished in 6th place, 58 seconds behind Roglic. With this result, Almeida will improve his overall classification position.
