Cyrille Guimard, former sports director and coach of the French national team, now a consultant for RMC Sport and La Chaine L’Equipe, discussed the various possibilities of the favorites for the 2023 edition of the Vuelta a España in his column on the CyclismActu website.
In this analysis, the Frenchman began by discussing the route of the 2023 Vuelta a España. “It’s a classic route for La Vuelta. The focus will be on climbers, specialists in summit finishes. Just look at the list of sprinters entered to know that they don’t have much to do in this Vuelta a España.”
“This means that the race will mainly be focused on the general classification and mountain stages.”
The Roglic-Vingegaard-Evenepoel Battle
“Jumbo-Visma still holds an advantage with two riders (Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic) capable of making a difference. But it’s always difficult to have two leaders in the same team, as there are egos, ambitions… even though for now the team is managing. Naturally, they must manage to put Remco Evenepoel in difficulty, even push him to the 3rd overall position.”
“Principalmente porque a equipe do Evenepoel é um pouco inferior quando comparamos com a Jumbo-Visma. Mas, esta disputa vai ser interessante de acompanhar. E tenho a sensação de que o belga deu mais um passo em frente. Isso será suficiente? Esta é a grande incógnita desta Vuelta.”
O francês não se cala sobre Ayuso, Almeida, e Thomas
Esta será uma Vuelta muito, muito bonita. Falta apenas um ciclista, é Tadej Pogacar. Este talvez seja o Grand Tour com o maior número de estrelas do ano. Acho que entre todos, Juan Ayuso é quem tem o maior potencial de Grand Tour entre os ‘outsiders’. Apesar da pouca idade, já demonstrou uma disposição extraordinária. Pode não lutar pela vitória, mas creio que terá um papel essencial”.
Para finalizar, um prognóstico
“Um prognóstico? Com a Jumbo-Visma, não corro muitos riscos (risos). Acho que o Evenepoel vai se meter em apuros, ou então ele está totalmente aéreo e aí ele entra em outra dimensão. Então eu colocaria o Roglic, que sempre se sente confortável nas estradas espanholas.”
