Oier Lazkano secured victory in the penultimate stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. The talented Spanish cyclist from the Movistar team showcased his superiority by leading a group of escapees from Pradoluengo to a challenging finish. He confidently outpaced his competitors, including Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious), Raúl García (Kern Pharma), and other riders.
Following the conclusion of the stage, the leadership of the general classification remains firmly in the hands of Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), without facing any threats.
The fourth day of the Vuelta a Burgos truly seemed destined for a breakaway, with a demanding finish. Departing from Santa Gadea del Cid, northeast of Burgos, the Alto de Cubilla (8 km at 4.6%) had to be conquered right away. A favorable opportunity for a group of attackers to distance themselves from the peloton. And that’s exactly what happened with nine cyclists.
And so, the nine riders at the front could prepare for a battle on the final ascent, the Acebal-Vizcarra, featuring a final kilometer with an average gradient of 7% and four tight bends in the last 500 meters. Joan Bou (Euskaltel Euskadi) launched the first attack in the penultimate kilometer. His move caused little damage as well. At 500 meters from the finish, Bou restarted his attempt for a first professional victory. Lazkano closed the gap, with Buitrago in tow.
The Colombian rider attempted to pass in the last bend, but the Movistar cyclist was simply too strong. With this stage victory, Lazkano has already secured his fourth win of the season. In addition to the Spanish championship, Lazkano also triumphed at the Boucles de la Mayenne.
