Australian cyclist James Whelan (Glassdrive-Q8) claimed victory in the ninth and penultimate stage of the 84th edition of Volta a Portugal. The stage, covering a challenging route of 174.5 km, unfolded amidst high-altitude terrains between Paredes and the Alto do Santuário da Senhora da Graça.
Clocking in at 4 hours, 32 minutes, and 45 seconds, James Whelan secured a solo victory at the summit finish of Santuário da Senhora da Graça (8.4 km at 7.5%). He crossed the line ahead of Spanish rider Delio Fernández (APHotels & Resorts) and Portuguese cyclist Hélder Gonçalves (Kelly-Simoldes-Udo), who claimed second and third places respectively, with time differences of 34 and 36 seconds.
Swiss rider Colin Stüssi (Vorarlberg), who donned the coveted yellow jersey as the overall leader following his victory in the seventh stage, maintained his prominent position atop the individual general classification.
