Jonathan Milan won the third stage of the Tour of Valencia. The young Italian from Lidl-Trek was the favorite and completed the sprint in a small pack, after a crash at the end of the stage. Arne Marit (Intermarché Wanty) and Giovanni Lonardi (Team Polti Kometa) closed the podium in 2nd and 3rd position respectively.
Escape was achieved in the end
An escape with the Spaniards Asier Etxeberria (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Unai Esparza (Illes Balears Arabay Cycling) and Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH), the British Nathan Smith (Novo Nordisk), the Uruguayan Guillermo Silva (Equipo Kern Pharma) and the Canadian Laurent Gervais (Project Echelon Racing) managed to stay ahead.
Esparza was unable to keep up with the fast pace in the final part and Gervais crashed on a corner, but the remaining four continued to fight. Five km from the finish line, they still had more than half a minute in the peloton.
However, favorite Jonathan Milan was lucky, because Intermarché-Wanty also had ambitions with Arne Marit. They closed the final gap, and Milan received crucial support from Simone Consonni to cross the finish line in 1st place.
