The Belgian team, Intermarché-Circus-Wanty, is facing a financial issue. Salaries for July, August, and September were not paid on time, causing unease and nervousness among cyclists and staff.
CEO Jean-François Bourlart confirmed this in a statement to the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. However, according to the team boss, there are no major issues.
“Several sponsors are behind on their quarterly payments, and that’s why we are also slightly delayed,” he said. “But this is just a one-time issue, it has nothing to do with our budget or any problems for the future.”
“The payment was made a bit later, but all the amounts were paid correctly. It’s serious when people are not paid.”
Employee Departures
Around ten employees (mechanics, coaches, doctors, and physiotherapists) have reportedly packed their bags. However, Bourlart is not concerned about this exodus. “Call other teams and ask how many employees are leaving. It will be the same.”
Employees Contacted UCI
There is some concern, especially among the staff. Some of them have contacted the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which has reprimanded the Belgian WorldTour team. “Indeed, there was contact with the UCI. Everything was transparent. The UCI conducts ongoing checks, audits every year,” Bourlart stated.
Issues with Sponsor
Lastly, Bourlart mentioned that the cash flow problems have nothing to do with the Circus sponsor. New legislation in Belgium limits the advertising possibilities for gambling companies. “Circus will disappear as a sponsor but will still be part of our team. We don’t have money right now, but it has nothing to do with Circus.”
