Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin Deceuninck) won the 4th stage of the Tour of Turkey 2023 after a massive sprint finish, marking his third victory in this year’s edition of the race and his 18th win this year. The 4th stage covered a distance of 165km with only a small 3km ascent, making a mass sprint finish predictable.
Nico Denz was the last attacker but was caught about 13km from the finish. With the pace remaining high in the final ascents and descents, none of the attacks and counter-attacks managed to break the peloton.
In the end, despite looking boxed in, Jasper Philipsen managed to surge forward and secure his third victory in this year’s race. Timothy Dupont of Tarteletto-Isorex finished in 2nd place, and Giovanni Lonardi of EOLO-Kometa took the 3rd position on the podium. The General Classification of the Tour of Turkey remains with Alexey Lutsenko of Astana Qazaqstan Team, who finished alongside the peloton.
With his 18th win of the season, Philipsen surpasses his former teammate Tadej Pogacar in the victory tally. Before the start of the fourth stage of the Tour of Turkey, they both had seventeen wins. Colombian Miguel Ángel López, who currently races for the continental team Medellín-EPM, has won 27 cycling races this season, but most of his victories were not at the professional level.
