UAE Emirates cyclist Finn Fisher-Black won the second stage of the Tour of Oman, marked by rainy weather in a competition that rarely sees this type of weather conditions. This stage, which ended on a steep mountain near Qurayyat, also marked Fisher-Black as the new race leader.
Despite the weather, 3 cyclists escaped
The beginning of the race was marked by attacks, culminating in a successful escape by three cyclists: Óscar Pelegrí (Burgos-BH), Nariyuki Masuda (JCL Team UKYO) and Tegsh-bayar Batsaikhan (Roojai Insurance).
These riders managed to maintain an advantage of more than six minutes over the peloton, whose pace was controlled by UAE Team Emirates. However, weather circumstances would soon make the race even more challenging. During the last hour of the race, rain began to fall heavily, a rare phenomenon in the thirteen-year history of the Tour of Oman.
Stones upon arrival
The intense rain posed significant problems for the runners, with rocks sliding onto the road just before the finish line. Furthermore, the rain interfered with the runners’ communication, with cuts to Radio Tour and the local television signal.
Despite these challenges, the runners managed to finish the race. The leading group was caught by the main peloton before the last climb, leaving everything open for the final climb. At that moment the rise was not enough to make a difference and Finn Fisher-Black (UAE Team Emirates) won the sprint.
Fisher-Black finished the race two seconds ahead of Luke Lamperti (Soudal-Quickstep) and Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates), placing him as the new leader in the Tour of Oman general classification.
