In 2023, there has been a concerning increase in the number of doping cases in elite cycling, with the French monitoring organization, MPCC (Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible), noting that the situation is as serious as it has not been seen in the past few years.
“This is the first time in four years that so many cases involving elite-level riders have come to light in such a short period. In 2019, there were five cases at this level,” says MPCC in a recent press release.
“In 2023, there were a total of fourteen doping cases in the sport, with four of them occurring at the World Tour level. Alex Baudin, Michel Hessmann, Robert Stannard, and Miguel Angel Lopez are the riders involved in doping-related actions against them this year.
“While awaiting the outcome of the process, it would be premature to draw conclusions about the World Tour based on these latest revelations,” says the MPCC. “These revelations serve as a reminder of the strength of our association’s approach, which is continually committed to fairness and ethics in our sport.”
