The former professional cyclist and Vuelta a España winner, Sean Kelly, currently works at Eurosport as a cycling commentator. After the 17th stage, when there was a lot of controversy about the team’s support for Sepp Kuss, Kelly was emphatic during Eurosport’s The Breakaway program.
“When they have such a close relationship over so many years, all this happens. It’s not like a rider has just joined the team and finds himself in the leader’s jersey.”
“You have to take that into consideration. I think Sepp Kuss’s agent is probably already on the phone with many teams.”
Recall the moment that caused all the controversy during the 2023 Vuelta.
“It’s not complicated. Sometimes tactics can get complicated with intermediate riders if they can become a threat to the General Classification, but there was no threat there,” he laments.
Sepp Kuss’s Temperament
“He’s a really nice guy,” Kelly concludes, referring to Kuss. “That’s Sepp’s problem; he can’t take that authority in the team briefing and say, ‘I want to win this race, guys.'”
