Jumbo-Visma will compete in the Vuelta a España with a dual leadership approach. Analyst and former professional Jan Bakelants understands how these situations can become complicated as the competition unfolds. He spoke to the Belgian newspaper De Tribune about the dynamics between the team’s leaders.
“I have the impression that Vingegaard isn’t coming to the Vuelta to ride for Roglic after his Tour victories; he’s coming to Spain with the idea of winning two Grand Tours this year.”
However, the presence of both can be intimidating for the leaders of other teams.
“Individually they may not necessarily be stronger than Evenepoel, but he has to try to control both of them. If the two of them find themselves, that will be the decisive factor. It would be a big advantage for Remco and for the team if it was immediately clear who the leader is, so there would be a focal point to target.”
In the 2022 Tour de France, things went well for the leaders, but that was also because Roglic was seriously injured after the first week. Does it all add up now that Vingegaard has a different status within the team? “I think it’s a learning experience for Jumbo-Visma. I believe Roglic wants to return to the Tour de France. This is a kind of test.”
Agreements will have to be made, according to Bakelants. After all, both athletes have the mentality of a leader. “Roglic is also a leader who seeks his own success. He wants to be the winner in Madrid.”
