The list of teams participating in the 50th Volta ao Algarve has been defined, totaling 25 teams now. In addition to the 13 previously disclosed teams and the nine Portuguese continental teams, the Visma-Lease a Bike, ranked as the second best in the world, the INEOS Grenadiers, holding the fourth position in the international ranking, and the Intermarché-Wanty, which concluded the 2023 season in the 14th position, have been added to the list.
Opportunity for Portuguese Teams
The 50th edition of the Volta ao Algarve represents the main opportunity for Portuguese teams to compete directly with the leading international formations. For this reason, all nine continental teams registered in Portugal for the year 2024 will be present at the start of this prestigious race.
The competition for the overall victory in the Portuguese stage race, part of the UCI ProSeries, promises once again to be fought between pure climbers and versatile cyclists. With two stages ending in climbs, an individual time trial of over twenty kilometers, and two stages typically designed for sprints, the commemorative edition of the 50th year of the Volta ao Algarve offers variety for all styles of cyclists.
The first significant challenge takes place on the second day when competitors face the ascent to Fóia (7.1 km at 6.8%). On the penultimate day, a demanding 22.2-kilometer individual time trial is scheduled in Albufeira and its surroundings. The culmination of the event will occur, as in previous editions of the Volta ao Algarve, on the slopes of Alto do Malhão (2.5 km at 9.9%).
