Sonny Colbrelli will take on the role of sports director for the Bahrain Victorious team starting in 2024. The Italian had a previous connection with the team as an ambassador after retiring from his professional cycling career, but he is now taking a step forward in this new role, as reported by the British channel GCN.
New role began in 2023
Colbrelli rode for the team between 2017 and 2022 before health issues forced him to retire in the middle of the last season. In 2023, the Italian started a light sports director role, but this will increase in the upcoming season, with the 33-year-old set to take the UCI sports director course and exam later this year.
Seven or eight sports directors at Bahrain Victorious in 2024.
“Sonny will take the UCI course at the end of this month,” said the team’s boss, Milan Eržen, to GCN.
“So he’ll be increasingly involved, especially in the Belgian Classics. We’ll have about seven or eight sports directors. This year Sonny was the team’s ambassador, but we’ve already had him in races because he has tremendous experience when it comes to Belgium and races like Paris-Roubaix.”
“Next year he’ll have more involvement. He’s a legend. Young riders saw him on TV and now they work with him in the race. That’s great motivation for the young cyclists.”
