The Volta ao Algarve was a small demonstration of Remco Evenepoel’s level of performance. After the competition, the Belgian revealed his destiny in search of an even better shape for his next goal.
Evenepoel will not return to Belgium, his training in the coming weeks will be in Calpe (Spain). “I feel at home,” said the cyclist with a smile. With the Algarve victory in hand, he will prepare for his next race, starting on March 3 in Les Mureaux, France, at Paris-Nice, where Remco Evenepoel is expected to make his debut.
Workouts to improve VO2 max
After a few days of rest, Evenepoel still has around ten days of training in Spain. “I’ve done a lot of resistance training and long-duration exercise,” he says.
“Now, I’m going to increase my VO2max a little and do high-intensity training for Paris-Nice. I need a few more percentage points to win there, but we are on the right track. Feet on the ground and keep fighting. Currently, the level in the peloton is so high that you need to be at least 95% fit to win.”
