After the disappointing day yesterday, Remco Evenepoel decided not to speak to the media. At the start of the 14th stage, he revealed his ambitions for the future of the Vuelta. “Every day there’s a chance to break away,” he says to Eurosport’s microphone.
“It was a completely bad day. Maybe fatigue has increased after a long season of hard work to achieve my goals. I spent three months away for the Giro, the same amount of time for this Vuelta. Maybe that took its toll yesterday.”
“My resting heart rate is also higher than usual. Maybe my recovery is slower than during the first week, or something is going on.”
The Time Trial World Champion continues: “Yesterday was very hard to find motivation. I shed many tears and had many doubts. But thankfully, I have good teammates, friends, and family around me who continue to motivate me.”
“There are still plenty of opportunities to win another stage, for me and for the team,” said Evenepoel, who managed to win the third stage to Arinsal. “We’re still moving forward. I can’t give up just yet because I really want to focus on the next eight stages. There could be an opportunity every day. It’s a new way of racing for me.”
