Primoz Roglic speaks about controversy in the Vuelta a España: “I taught everything to Sepp, but even if I had won, I would have left”

Starting January 1st, Primoz Roglic will no longer be part of Jumbo-Visma. His move to BORA-hansgrohe is not related to the eventful last week of the Vuelta a España, as stated by the Slovenian cyclist in an interview with Algemeen Dagblad.

Controversy occurred in the 17th stage on the Angliru.

Uncomfortable Experience

Roglic started the Vuelta a España as the leader but finished the competition in third place, behind Sepp Kuss and Jonas Vingegaard. In the final days of the race, the team chose to assign the red jersey to the American cyclist. However, Roglic doesn’t hide that this decision by the team was an uncomfortable experience.

“It’s my responsibility to win races,” he explains. “On the other hand, it wasn’t just about me; it was also about the team. And no one deserves it more than Sepp.”

“Students Surpass the Master”

“A few years ago, I taught everything to Jonas and Sepp; they still admired me, and now they were numbers 1 and 2. We made history, and I was part of it. But even if I had won the Vuelta, I would have left,” said the 34-year-old cyclist, who still has a major goal: to win the Tour de France. “I will simply have better opportunities elsewhere to achieve what I am still fighting for.”

“I reached a point where I had to leave.”
The choice to switch from Jumbo-Visma to BORA-hansgrohe was not difficult for Roglic. “More like something natural. I reached the maximum I could with Jumbo. It got to the point where I had to leave. This does not diminish how happy I was on the podium in Madrid. I hope to be even happier in future photos and with a different jersey.”

Roglic’s last Grand Tour with Jumbo-Visma was the Vuelta a España in 2023.
