Cyclists Rui Costa and Marijn van den Berg, from the EF Education-EasyPost team, were forced to abandon the Volta ao Algarve. Both suffered injuries in the third stage of the race this Friday.
Costa, an experienced Portuguese runner, had to be taken to hospital for further medical assessment after the accident, where it was found that he fractured his right scapula and clavicle. He also suffered a concussion.
Marijn van den Berg, on the other hand, initially looked good enough to continue in the race. However, upon further assessment in the minutes following the accident, it was noted that he was showing symptoms of a possible concussion. This led team officials to also remove him from the competition.
Van den Berg is now being supervised under the EF Education-EasyPost team’s concussion protocol until all necessary medical checks are completed.
The EF Pro Cycling team posted an update on Twitter regarding the condition of the riders. “Rui Costa left and was taken to hospital for further tests, which confirmed fractures to his right scapula and clavicle. He was also diagnosed with a concussion.”
The Cycling Giro estimates the speedy recovery of the two athletes
