Colombian cyclist Rigoberto Urán, from EF Education EasyPost, surprised his fans by revealing in an interview with the Colombian channel RCN that he is close to ending his distinguished career as a professional cyclist. With two podium finishes in the Giro d’Italia (2013 and 2014) and an excellent second place in the Tour de France (2017), the cyclist from Urrao, Colombia, will leave a mark on the history of cycling after more than a decade in the elite of the sport.

Rigoberto Urán has always had one of the largest fan bases in the professional peloton.

At 36 years old, Urán reflected on his career and the possibility of retiring in the near future: “This year has been a very regular year; no objectives were achieved, but there is always the illusion that I am approaching a cycle that is about to end.”

Last competition

Urán also shared details about what could be his last competition. “The idea is to come back. We don’t know how the season will be, whether I’ll be at the Tour [de France], that’s up to the team to decide, and I hope that at the Paris 2024 Olympics, it will be the last race.”

In addition to his victories, moments like this, where “Rigo” gives a jersey as a gift to a boy who followed him on the road, will be etched in the cyclist’s history.

The issue of retirement has been a concern for Urán, who recognized the challenges that athletes face when they retire and have to adapt to life outside of competition.

“For me, I was concerned about what to do when you retire. The thing is, fame is crap, and a lot of people believe in those things. It started as a hobby, but Michelle (his wife) always had a very big vision,” said Urán, revealing that he will likely expand his dedication to his chain of GO RIGO GO stores, with branches in various countries.
