The legendary road cycling career of Peter Sagan is coming to an end. The 3-time World Champion, 7-time Tour de France green jersey winner, Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders champion will be hanging up his bike this Sunday (October 1) during the Tour de Vendee in France.
In a statement to CyclingNews, Sagan appeared relaxed about the significance of the race. In fact, Sagan doesn’t have many expectations surrounding his final race.
“No, I don’t think that way. Friends and other things, yes, as well as the team, but not the media,” he said modestly. “Because, you know, my road career is ending, but I’m getting into Mountain Biking. One chapter is closing, but another is opening.”
Peter Sagan did not have a last year of his career as he deserved. In fact, he hasn’t had a top-level performance for a few years. “Oh, well,” Sagan says without hesitation. “I think after the Tour de France and the MTB and Road World Championships, my form has dropped. Then, two weeks ago, I got sick.”
“But this race is very important for the team because it’s in this part of France where they are based, and they organized a nice farewell to celebrate the end of my career. So, there will be many things to do, and it will be a pleasure to go there and see all the people who have been supporting us,” Sagan concludes.
