Rui Costa left behind Alejandro Valverde and Vincenzo Nibali, who were his breakaway companions, to join Joaquim Rodriguez, the race leader. In a spectacular finish, the Portuguese cyclist defeated “Purito” Rodriguez in a two-rider sprint, earning him the coveted rainbow jersey to wear throughout the 2014 season.
