Matteo Jorgenson is a versatile cyclist capable of handling different types of races. His precise role in the Visma-Lease a Bike team has not been determined, as stated by Merijn Zeeman in a conversation with the French website Velo. In the coming weeks, it will be decided whether he will focus more on classics or stage races.
Jorgenson to have opportunities in stage races
“Of course, he is a very strong cyclist,” says Zeeman about Jorgenson, who comes from Movistar. “I think he will really have the opportunity to become a General Classification rider. In the winter, we will see if he gets a spot on the team for the spring classics or focuses on stage races. That is still on the table.”
Zeeman confirms that Jorgenson will have the opportunity to be team captain.
In any case, it is clear to Zeeman that Jorgenson will not be used simply as a domestique. “Those comments are not correct. People who say that he will only work for others don’t really follow our team,” he said.
“We have many riders who are achieving results within our team. Our team is not built around one leader. If you look at how many riders from our team have won a classic, few teams can achieve that.”
“In the Tour de France, everything will be geared towards the success of Jonas Vingegaard, but there are also opportunities for other cyclists in stages,” says Zeeman.
“Even in the Tour, you can always see, and perhaps it’s difficult for people to understand the strategy, that everything is well thought out and not conservative. Often we are in breakaways, and cyclists have the opportunity to win stages.”
