Matteo Jorgenson is leaving the Movistar team at the end of this year after four seasons with the Spanish squad. The 24-year-old American cyclist has signed a three-year contract with Jumbo-Visma.
In an interview with CyclingNews, Jorgenson shared the reasons behind his move and his expectations for the coming years. “I wanted to find a team where I could reach my peak,” he explained.
“That’s what interests me the most at this point in my career, especially while I’m still young and realize I have plenty of room to grow. I sought a team where I could bring out the best in myself. That was my top priority, going to a place where I could reach my physical peak.”
Several teams pursued Jorgenson
According to speculations, the Jumbo-Visma team was just one of several teams interested in signing the American cyclist. So why did he choose them? Jorgenson explains: “I’m going to a team where I don’t have to handle everything on my own and where there’s already a structure in place, which I’m really looking forward to having.”
He goes on, “It will be much less personal stress, and I won’t have to take care of those things; they will already be there, integrated.”
Concerns about the merger with Soudal Quick-Step
Regarding the recent discussion about Jumbo-Visma’s potential merger with Soudal – Quick-Step, Jorgenson admits that it raised concerns. “I had some personal doubts when I read the news because with something like that, you never really know,” he recalls. “Literally anything could have happened, but in the end, nothing happened. I was a bit stressed in the first few days when I read it, but then the team told me that nothing was going on, and everything was normal,” Jorgenson concludes.
