Marc Hirschi was seen as the top favorite for the Giro del Veneto, but the leader of UAE Team Emirates couldn’t keep up with the favorites on the final climb to the Basilica of Monte Berico. The Swiss champion ended up in fifth place. ‘I didn’t have that extra push anymore, but I tried everything,’ he said afterward in front of the WielerFlits camera.
‘It was very tough, mentally as well. Every mistake can cost you many positions, and at the end of the season, everything seems even more challenging. Many cyclists have given up, and you need to be mentally prepared 100% to achieve a good result here.’
Marc Hirschi was good in the last 500 meters but couldn’t escape. He doesn’t want to call it a mistake. ‘No, everything went well. 100 meters from the finish, I got a little boxed in and lost some speed. But that always happens in the finales. Things almost never go perfectly. I really went to my limit, so that was the maximum possible.’
