Jumbo-Visma coach doesn’t rule out Jonas Vingegaard as the champion of the 2023 Vuelta a España

While Jumbo-Visma aims to secure a historic Grand Tour hat trick at the Vuelta a España, Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard is setting his sights on achieving a consecutive victory within three weeks.

“It’s a realistic goal,” asserts Jumbo-Visma coach Mathieu Heijboer to the Dutch website Wielerrevue. However, winning the Tour de France doesn’t guarantee victory in the Vuelta a España. “There’s a high factor of risk here. We believe in preparing for a specific date, and we did that before the Tour. If everything goes well, I dare say he’ll be at his level.”

“For the Vuelta, everything is somewhat uncertain because the preparation time was shorter,” concludes Mathieu Heijboer. “On the other hand, we’ve already seen that it works with Primož and Kruijswijk.”

Jumbo-Visma will have dual leadership at the Vuelta, as Jonas Vingegaard will be alongside Giro d’Italia winner Primoz Roglic. Before the race, it would be accurate to say that the Dutch team is favored for victory, despite the high level of competition from names like Remco Evenepoel, Geraint Thomas, Juan Ayuso, and Enric Mas.
