Jonas Vingegaard is set to announce his competition schedule for the next year next week. However, the Dane, in an interview with the Dutch website Wieler Revue, reflected on the ending year, not neglecting his goals for 2024.
Vuelta a España 2023
“There was an agreement that we would race for it. I wanted Sepp to win, but it was also true that if Sepp didn’t win, I wanted to win myself. So, at a certain point, I was in a bit of a tricky situation. If Sepp hadn’t been strong enough to keep up, I would have won the Vuelta with joy myself. But I’m happy that Sepp won,” reveals Jonas Vingegaard, without considering the possibility of victory for Primoz Roglic, who was also clearly aiming for the top prize in the competition.
Primoz Roglic’s departure makes it easier to choose the leaders.
“Of course, this gives some room to the team. In the Vuelta, I was very happy for Sepp’s victory, and, in my opinion, we should have made it clear beforehand that we were riding for Sepp. If you’re in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the rankings, you shouldn’t engage in a mano-a-mano battle anymore.”
Cycling’s Biggest Dream
Vingegaard also revealed his biggest dream. “It would be a dream for me to participate in all Grand Tours in a year and then compete for victory. I’m not sure if it’s physically possible. We will discuss this again with the team to investigate the feasibility. It’s a bizarre plan, but it’s certainly the biggest dream I have in cycling,” concluded Jonas Vingegaard.
