This Saturday, February 3, Jhonatan Narváez (INEOS Grenadiers), became the new Ecuadorian Cycling Champion. Narváez overcame the previous champion, Richard Carapaz (EF Education EasyPost), and Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda (Caja Rural-RGA Seguros) in a race decided in the final sprint.
Exciting final sprint
The Ecuadorian Championship was held in Riobamba, where cyclists faced a mountainous route of eleven laps, totaling more than 180 kilometers of racing.
On the last lap, only four cyclists remained in the lead. In addition to Narváez and Carapaz, there were Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) and Jefferson Alexander Cepeda (EF Education-EasyPost). However, the latter ended up abandoning the race, leaving the responsibility for victory to his teammate, Carapaz.
Narváez stands out
In the final sprint, Narváez was clearly the fastest. The 26-year-old started his sprint early and easily overtook Carapaz and Cepeda. This is the second time that Narváez has become the national cycling champion among professionals, having won the first title in 2017.
