Isaac del Toro 20 years old made his professional debut this week at the Tour Down Under and immediately presented his calling card on the second stage. The great Mexican talent managed to surprise a reduced field, with an attack with 1.3 km to the finish.
Speechless
“This is really unbelievable, crazy… I really don’t know,” Del Toro, still out of breath, searched for words in the brief interview, shortly after arrival. “What it means? I don’t know, I’m very emotional. Last year was already unbelievable, but this… Sorry, I really don’t know what to say.”
Last kilometer felt like 5 kilometers
“I already dreamed of winning a stage. It really feels great,” he said shortly after arrival, after catching his breath. “The Tour Down Under is a great race. The team did a great job and the atmosphere is really great. I feel a lot of support from the team. Honestly: the last kilometer really felt like five kilometers. I can look back on a successful stage and everything that comes with it now is a bonus.”
New leader
Del Toro not only won the second stage, he is also the new leader of the Tour Down Under. His advantage over New Zealander Corbin Strong is two seconds, Biniam Girmay is number three in the classification, seven seconds behind the Mexican.
