Giro d’Italia 2024: Route revealed, with over 60 km of time trials and significant ascents

RCS Sport unveiled the full itinerary of the Giro d’Italia 2024 on Friday. Next year’s Italian edition will begin on Saturday, May 4, with a challenging stage to Turin, and conclude three weeks later on Sunday, May 26, with a flat stage starting and ending in Rome.

The first three stages of the 2024 Giro had already been disclosed. The inaugural stage will start from Venaria Reale and end in Turin. A highlight of this route is the presence of Superga, a known climb from the Milan-Turin route. On the second day, cyclists will face the ascent to Oropa, which is over ten kilometers long. The third day will offer the first chance for the sprinters to showcase their skills.

The fourth and fifth stages are also characterized by being flat. However, on the sixth day, a special attraction is reserved. The start takes place in Viareggio, and the finish is scheduled for Rapolano Terme, passing through several gravel sections, some of them reminiscent of the Strade Bianche.

The first individual time trial is scheduled for the seventh day, where cyclists will tackle a 37.3-mile route from Foligno to Perugia. The first part of the time trial is characterized by being flat and fast, but in the final kilometers, the definition will occur as the finish is uphill.

The next day, a mountain stage will take competitors to Prati di Tivo, involving an extensive climb. The challenging first week concludes with a long but flat stage towards Naples.

In the second week of the 2024 Giro, the cyclists are immediately confronted with another challenging stage. After covering 141 kilometers, they will reach Bocca della Selva, a long final climb. The next day, in the 11th stage, the cyclists will have a well-deserved rest day with a flat stage. The 12th stage is a typical transition stage, but it includes no less than ten categorized climbs.

The thirteenth stage offers another opportunity for the sprinters. We then arrive at the last weekend of the second week, which will be extremely tough. On Saturday, there’s a 31 km time trial from Castiglione delle Stiviere to Desenzano del Garda, near Lake Garda. The 15th stage is the longest stage, covering a distance of 220 kilometers, finishing in Mottolino, Livigno.

The third and final week begins with another challenging stage. The legendary Stelvio is part of the route, but the stage’s finish also presents difficulties. Monte Pana is the final climb to be tackled. In the seventeenth stage, the finish is scheduled for Passo Brocon, a climb making its Giro debut. The last two kilometers, in particular, are especially tough, with an average gradient of over 10%.

After a day of racing for the sprinters and another for the more aggressive riders in stages eighteen and nineteen, it’s time to face another climb on the penultimate day. The route goes from Alpago to Bassano del Grappa, and Monte Grappa must be tackled twice. However, the finish doesn’t occur at the summit but after a long descent. Finally, the 21st stage features a flat section in Rome, similar to this year’s route.
