Geraint Thomas will only be present at this year’s Giro d’Italia, but is also expected to race the Tour de France. The 37-year-old Brit shared this information this Wednesday, revealing his enthusiasm mixed with a certain fear. “I’m looking forward to it, but at the same time I feel a little scared. However, it is something I need,” he stated.
Geraint Thomas already did this in 2017
In a live on Instagram, Thomas shared the information alongside former cyclist Matt Stephens. The veteran cyclist detailed his plans for the coming months, highlighting a notable decision: he will participate in the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France in 2024.
It is worth mentioning that Thomas already did this double in 2017, but faced setbacks, which led him to retire prematurely from both competitions.
Great adventure at the Giro d’Italia 2024
Thomas finished second in the 2023 Giro d’Italia after being defeated by Primoz Roglic on the penultimate day.
“I really wanted to return to the Giro for a great adventure”, explains the Brit. “And I didn’t go to the Tour last year, so for me it was a logical choice. But it’s an exciting choice, even though I need it too.”
Big challenge in the Tour de France 2024
“I’ve been a professional cyclist for eighteen years and now I’m going to try something new. That’s why I get out of bed in the morning. It will certainly be a challenge, but there is enough knowledge in the team and there are a lot of guys who have already participated in the Tour and the Vuelta in one season.”
“I’m normally someone who only does one Grand Tour a year. The period between the Giro and the Tour now becomes crucial. And after the Tour we will still have the Olympic Games.”
Start of the season in Portugal
The winner of the 2018 Tour is currently in Tenerife to prepare for the season. He should open his year of competitions at the Volta ao Algarve. He then heads to the Tour de Catalunya, a Training Camp at altitude in the Sierra Nevada and shortly after the Tour of the Alps, finishing the preparation for the Giro d’Italia.
