Italy mourns the death of Patrick Mentil, the former cyclist who retired at the end of 2021 after enrolling at the University of Padua. The 22-year-old young man died on Thursday night in a brutal traffic accident in the Onigo region, near the cyclist’s residence.
Mentil competed for Work Service Marchiol Vega, even participating in the Giro d’Italia 2021 Next Gen and competing against Juan Ayuso in the Italian competition.
Accident in the Onigo region
The young man was involved in a head-on collision in the Onigo region (Italy) between two vehicles, a white Audi A3 and a black Land Rover, caused by the recklessness of the German car, in which the young man was present, crossing into the opposite lane with the intention of overtaking.
Despite the efforts of healthcare services, the Suem 118 helicopter, the Carabinieri, and a team of Montebelluna firefighters, nothing could be done to save Mentil’s life. In the accident, three other people were also seriously injured.
