Egan Bernal, after his serious accident, managed to return to competitions, which seemed unlikely to happen. And during the year 2023, he did so at a slightly higher level, as the Colombian managed to race both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España, finishing both.
Now, in an interview with the British channel Global Cycling Network, Bernal states that he is ready to go further, which might give some hope to the team with the biggest budget in the World Tour, INEOS Grenadiers, who have watched their rival, Jumbo-Visma, dominate all three Grand Tours on the calendar.
“The Vuelta went well, and I had better sensations than in the Tour de France. I feel stronger overall, and it’s a bit of everything, both mentally and physically.”
During the interview, Egan Bernal made his strategy clear, stating that he has never accumulated as many kilometers as in 2023. He emphasizes that he has been competing since the Volta a Catalunya. Therefore, he is not concerned about the results this year but believes that the important results will come in the next year.
“Doing two Grand Tours was giving me the kilometers and the base for my legs. It has been a big challenge for me, and I have never competed so many days in a single season in my life. I’ve been racing in World Tour events since Catalonia. It’s not about aiming for a result this season but looking forward to next year.”
